Before diving into the organization process, it's crucial to understand the space you're working with and your specific needs. Are you dealing with a small reach-in closet or a spacious walk-in? Do you prefer to hang garments or fold them and tuck them away? By assessing the dimensions of your closet and the type of clothing you own, you can tailor your organization strategy to fit your unique situation.
Measure your closet and understand how many items you can realistically fit
Pull everything out of your closet. Start to categorize your clothing (e.g., work pants, blazers, jeans, workout gear, coats, sweaters, tops, t-shirts).
Consider any seasonal items, such as coats and sweaters.
Begin To Declutter
The foundation of any organized closet is decluttering. This means going through every item and deciding what stays and what goes. It could be that the original categories have now changed and/or can be consolidated. You may group clothes by type, color, or occasion. Once that is done, ensure that everything is accessible. It is important to place frequently used items at eye level and lesser-used items on higher or lower shelves.
Implement Storage Solutions
Here is the fun part - putting those loved items into an organized storage solution. There are many ways to approach this stage in the process, but we want to emphasize: the storage solution should relate back to the amount of closet space and your needs, as well as the items themselves. For example, if you find yourself having more foldable t-shirts and sweaters, optimizing drawers may be ideal. Or maybe you have quite the shoe collection, hence a shoe organizer would be a great fit.
Another aspect to consider is maximizing your space. Use the back of your closet door for hanging items, shelf dividers and multi-level hangers to maximize wall space, and perhaps storage boxes to tuck away more seasonal articles of clothing. This is where creative thinking may come into play, but there are a multitude of sources online where you can get ideas. For anything you do plan to tuck away as seasonal, be sure to maintain and protect the item's condition and still have them easily accessible for when the time of year does come.
